People often complain that Valentine’s Day is just a commercial holiday where greeting card and flower companies make money. There could be some degree of truth to that, but the underlying essence, of course, is something bigger. It’s about remembering those we love, appreciating them, and celebrating the relationships.
We tend to think of romantic relationships first, but there’s no reason Valentine’s Day can’t be for any and all relationships. Can you acknowledge and appreciate your parents? How about your children? How about friends in the church that have made an impact on your life? Sometimes, it’s the people closest to us that we begin to take for granted. What better time to make sure they know how much we care?
Cards, candy, and flowers are all fine ways to show someone you care, but a kind note can also be just as uplifting and encouraging. An intentional act of service can speak louder than anything. Kids—what would your parents think if you showed your love by offering to help clean the house (above and beyond your chores) without being asked? Parents—your kids might appreciate some dedicated time together doing something THEY like, even if it’s not your cup of tea. For those living alone—is there a friend or neighbor you could do something unexpected and kind for?
Being a Christian is first and foremost about loving God and loving others. Let’s make Valentine’s Day all about that!
