I saw one advertisement the other day that was promoting their upcoming “black Friday” sale. I don’t remember which store was running the ad, but it said something along the lines of “Start your holiday off right by getting the best deals!” It got me thinking about how sad it is that some people really may think getting something on sale is the best part of a holiday. Perhaps they wouldn’t acknowledge this, but I do think there are many people so caught up in accumulating stuff that the holiday season becomes all about it.
Many times my go-to reaction about this type of thing is one of disappointment or disapproval, but it struck me differently this time. If someone’s biggest pleasure is acquiring the newest gadget or discounted furniture, how empty their life must be! When people aren’t seeking Christ, they will be constantly looking for something to help them fulfill their lives. The advertisers tell them that their new product will do the trick, but it will only last for a short time, and the emptiness will take over again.
I’m convicted this year that when I see the celebration of Christ’s birth get distorted by commercialism, instead of inwardly grumbling and complaining, I’m going to try and remember to pray for the people for whom the happiness of a good sale is the best feeling they know. I’m going to pray that they will come to see the true joy that Jesus can bring.
