I'm living proof of what the mercy of God can do
If you knew me then, you'd believe me now
He turned my whole life upside down
Took the old and He made it new
That's just what the mercy of God can do
Now I'm alive to tell the story, how I've overcome
It's His goodness and mercy and the power of His blood
I'm so glad that my freedom wasn't based on what I've done
The goodness and mercy and the power of the blood
Specifically, the line “I’m so glad that my freedom wasn’t based on what I’ve done” stuck out to me last Thursday. We generally think of “fair” as a good thing, but when it comes to what our deeds deserve in the eyes of God, suddenly fair is no longer what we want! I’m glad that God hasn’t treated me fairly. I’m glad that He has treated me according to His grace and His mercy instead of what I’ve actually deserved.
Do I treat others fairly, or do I treat others with grace and mercy? Fairness says “I’m gonna treat you poorly because you treated me poorly.” Fairness talks about what we deserve. When I treat people the way they deserve, is that pointing them to Christ? I pray that God helps each of us learn to show a little grace and mercy to others as a way of leading them to the Savior who is ready to lavish them with His perfect grace and mercy.
