First, losing power and water, two of the things we consider essential in today’s society, reminds me of what is REALLY essential—our salvation in Christ. Everything else on this earth can be taken away, but never our salvation once we’ve trusted in Christ.
Second, it reminds me that all of my plans are really more flexible than I like to think they are. Nothing last week went as I expected, but the world didn’t end. The church didn’t fall apart. I can come back and pick up where I left off, and not much has really changed. I need to be more ready to hold my plans loosely.
Third, it reminds me to be more thankful for the little things that I take for granted, like the usual dependability of power and water, the safety of friends, and the comfort of my home. We’ve seen how easily each of these things can be upended. Let’s appreciate and treasure them.
I certainly hope we don’t see another week like last one any time soon, but even in tough times—maybe especially in tough times—God can teach us important lessons. Let’s not waste the opportunity to learn and grow as he is working in our lives!
