This type of thing serves to remind me of an important truth—all of us are vulnerable to temptation. Given the perfect storm of circumstances, none of us are immune to making a terrible choice that hurts others and changes the course of our lives forever. 1 Corinthians 10:12 says “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” We’re all sinful beings, with sinful desires. We are all vulnerable to our temptations and if we’re not careful, we could easily find ourselves in a place we never thought we’d be.
Thankfully, the scripture passage doesn’t end there, but continues in verse 13: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it”. In other words, God knows our weaknesses and temptations, and He has provided a way for us to overcome—as long as we’re willing to submit to His way. Having a weakness or temptation is not a sin—we all have them. Fooling ourselves into thinking our own willpower is stronger than our temptations is what leads us into sin. I encourage you to be open and honest with God about your own temptations and daily ask for His protection and guidance.
