These types of things stick with us because they made a big impact on our lives at the time. Because they made a big impact, we are often reminded of them, and they still play a part in our lives today. For some things, we hold events to help us remember—like birthday parties or wedding anniversaries.
Celebrating the Lord’s Supper is much the same way. While we weren’t present to actually remember Jesus’ sacrifice, we call to mind what the scriptures tell us about it, and we can use the occasion to remind us of the first time we felt the call of Christ on our lives to surrender ourselves to him.
