At the same time, we are right to also have concerns about our country. Our leadership has gone beyond ensuring all people to have freedom to live the way they want to and crossed over into subsidizing ways of life that are contrary to the scriptures. There are also regular questions about integrity and trustworthiness of governmental leaders—from all different political backgrounds.
It’s a strange feeling to both love a country and be frustrated by it. I know many of you can relate to that sentiment. We cannot blindly accept everything our country stands for, neither should we angrily dismiss it all either. It requires us to be discerning. It requires us to regularly evaluate the things in our country and world against the word of God. Regardless of political party, regardless of historical precedent, regardless of what our family and friends say, we have to consider all our country does with fresh spiritual eyes. We can be proud of the things that honor God while praying for the parts that do not.
This complicated relationship with a country that is not fully one thing or another makes me even more thankful for a God who is fully good. We don’t have to discern whether His way is good or not, because by His very nature, all He does is good and right. What a comfort to have our foundation in the solid bedrock of our eternally loving Father!
