There are many good reasons to volunteer at something like this. Primarily, we make sure people in our community don’t go hungry, and God has called for His people to take care of the poor and hungry. But I think opportunities like this can help us relate to others as well. It gets us out of our own bubbles for a few minutes to get a glimpse into the lives of others. People coming to get food are created in God’s image and are loved by God in exactly the same way you and I are, but for whatever reason (and it’s not up to us to be overly concerned with this reason!) they find themselves in need.
I’m reminded each time I go to help how very blessed I am. God has provided for my family far more than we could ever deserve. God doesn’t bless us so we can hoard for ourselves, but rather to serve others. Acts 20:35 says, “ In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In what ways is God calling you to help and serve those who might have had a more difficult life than you have?
