It’s easy to wonder how most of this affects us. It’s easy to think it doesn’t really matter who wins. And in an eternal sense, it doesn’t matter a great deal, because God is still God regardless of what our local and national leaders do. At the same time, we do have a responsibility as current residents of the United States to represent our Lord well as we put in our votes.
But how do we know who to vote for? Do we just look at the little letter after each candidate’s name and vote because of the party with which they affiliate? Party affiliation can tell us something, but it’s our duty to be more diligent than that. For starters, especially for those who are incumbent, we can look at their voting records. Have they indeed stood up for what they said they would? What kind of public record does each candidate have? Have they shown themselves trustworthy, responsible, honest, hardworking, and humble? To me, those characteristics are just as important—and possibly more—than the rehearsed statements they make about their platforms.
Pray, consider carefully, and vote for the candidates you think will best represent you as a whole—not just over one issue. Then, remind yourself that God is still on the throne...no matter what happens!
