Kim and I were blessed to have a visit from my sister and her two kids this week. My 11-year-old niece and 7-year-old nephew were quite taken by our baby Grace. They would watch her closely and got to sit and hold her for a bit. Later in the day, they got to give her a bottle. All throughout the day, they were marveling over how little she was, commenting about her facial expressions, and asking all kinds of questions about her. It was clear they were in awe of this little child.
Children are commonly seeing and experiencing new things, and it’s fun to watch them as they explore the world around them. But as adults, I’m afraid it’s often easy for us to treat everything as commonplace. We’ve been around the block and seen everything. When is the last time you’ve been in awe and stood amazed by something you saw?
It’s easy for us as Christians to become callous to who God is and what Christ did for us. It’s important for us to occasionally step back from the familiarity we’ve built up with the things of God, and really realize who he is. God existed before time. What? How is that possible? He created the universe with a word. How could anyone have that kind of power? This same God cared enough for you and I to send his only son to his death for us. Come again? He wants to have a relationship with us. Who are we to have an audience with the God of the universe?
When Jesus asked us to come to him like little children, I think this is at least part of what he meant. I pray you and I can rekindle the awe and wonder of who God is and what he has done for us.
Proud to be partnering with you in Christ,
Matt DesAutels
