Seeing the power of a storm like that can remind us of how small we are and how powerful our God is. If he had the mind to, he could create a storm that would wipe us all away in an instant. But, because he is a loving and kind God, He doesn’t do that. It makes me think of the call we have to fear God. It’s a little bit like the way we fear a storm. Looking out at the scary clouds while listening to the sounds of wind and hail are enough to put a little fear in anyone. But it’s not the “running around screaming” type of fear (at least I hope it isn’t), but it is the type of fear that makes us seriously respect the power of a storm. Kim and I moved our cars to where they would be sheltered from hail out of fear, or respect, of the storm.
As much as we fear or respect a strong storm, do you fear God? Do you respect the power he has to whip up a storm with only a thought? In the way that strong weather will get all of our attention, does God have your attention? Are you regularly aware of his mighty, awesome power? Do you bow in reverence for his strength? I hope next time we have a storm like that it makes you think of the power of God.
