Please remember that every candidate out there—those you agree with and those you do not—is a beloved creation of the same God that created you. Just because you find a candidate disagreeable does not make it right to speak of them unkindly. Remember Jesus’ command in Matthew 5:44: “Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you.” Is that your response to candidates who rub you the wrong way? How about your response to people who support those disliked candidates?
Additionally, it’s possible to disagree kindly and respectfully. Stay away from responses that attack people, like “I hate that candidate, and people who support him/her are stupid”. Instead, discuss the issues. “I disagree with that candidate’s way of handling this. To me, this other candidate has a better way, and here’s why I think that…”
Above all, remember that no politician or government policy is going to be the answer for what our country and world needs. The answer always has been and always will be Jesus. Let us be careful to point others towards him in the way we discuss and handle the issues of the day. In the end, no one will care who was elected in 2020, but all will know who the Eternal King is, as we either worship at his feet or suffer in eternal separation from him. Shouldn’t that be our bigger concern?
Proud to be partnering with you in Christ,
Matt DesAutels
