Last week, Kim and I caught the stomach bug, and it hit us hard. We both were unable to do anything all day Thursday. Thankfully, Kim’s parents were able to come and pick up Grace (who somehow did NOT catch the bug) and keep her for a day and a half while we sat around feeling miserable. Both of us thought that was the most sick we had felt since we were children.
Being sick like that affects everything you do. Even getting up to get the next dose of medication feels like an insurmountable task. For me, it reminded me to stop taking for granted the good health of our family, and be more thankful. It made me think about those who have long-term debilitating illnesses that make daily life very challenging.
We complain about difficulties like this when they come up, and it’s understandable, because it’s miserable. But, if we never had those times, how complacent would we be about the blessings of good health and a happy life? I am certainly not happy about getting sick this past week, but I am thankful for the renewed appreciation it gives me for the daily goodness of God we experience. I’m able to get up and do the things I need and want. I’m able to work and earn an income for my family.
I hope you can take a moment to be thankful for the simple blessings in your life—and you can do so without having to get sick!
